Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant mental health challenge affecting new mothers, characterized by persistent sadness, anxiety, and emotional instability. The World Health Organization (2024) estimates that approximately 15-20% of new mothers globally experience PPD, with higher prevalence rates in low-resource settings due to limited access to mental health care. In Nigeria, studies indicate that social stigma, lack of awareness, and inadequate healthcare services contribute to underdiagnosis and poor management of PPD (Okafor & Adeyemi, 2023).
Nurse-led counseling has been recognized as an effective intervention for PPD prevention. Through emotional support, psychoeducation, and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, nurses can help mothers cope with postpartum stress and reduce the risk of developing severe depressive symptoms (Bello & Ibrahim, 2024). Despite its potential benefits, the effectiveness of nurse-led counseling in preventing PPD among mothers in Taraba State remains underexplored.
This study aims to examine the impact of nurse-led counseling programs on preventing postpartum depression among mothers in Taraba State.
Postpartum depression remains a largely neglected maternal health issue in Nigeria, with many affected women receiving little to no mental health support. In Taraba State, factors such as cultural stigma, inadequate maternal healthcare services, and a lack of trained mental health professionals exacerbate the problem (Suleiman & Hassan, 2024). Although nurses play a vital role in providing emotional and psychological support to new mothers, there is limited empirical evidence on the effectiveness of nurse-led counseling in preventing PPD.
Addressing this knowledge gap is essential to improve maternal mental health outcomes and develop targeted interventions for PPD prevention in Taraba State.

This study will focus on mothers who have recently given birth in healthcare facilities in Taraba State and the role of nurse-led counseling in preventing PPD. Limitations may include reluctance of mothers to disclose mental health struggles due to stigma and limited access to participants in remote areas.
